Coach Blames Himself After Team's First Loss

What would start off as a great night for B.I.A. would end in disaster.  Last Wednesday night saw B.I.A. solve their run production problems in the first game, only to have to be faced with it again during the second game.

In the first game at Field #1, Balls In Action would take on new opponent Shake & Bake (not to be confused with Shake N Bake from their first season).  From the start, B.I.A. would take it to their opponents, scoring 4 runs in each of the first three innings.  In the first, Roy would highlight the inning with a 3 run homerun.  Scott would drive in two runs, with Matt and Kelsey each driving a run each during the second innning.  The third inning saw Chance make his return with the team with a grandslam.  B.I.A. shutout their opponents 12-0, resulting with a victory by 5th inning mercy rule.  Scott, coach and pitcher for the team, could not have been more pleased.

"We struggled last week offensively, but we really piled on the runs tonight.  We're still a real sound team defensively.  Things are starting to click with this team, despite half the team being rookies."

Those words would be challenged during the team's second game as they met rival Brews On First.  B.I.A. has seen success in their only three meetings, beating them each time, but during their fourth meeting, Brews On First had different plans.  B.I.A. struck first in the top half of the first inning with Jacob scoring on a RKI single by Jessica, making that 18 straight runs by the team without giving up a run (a team record).  However, in the bottom half of the first, Brews On First would score two runs on careless errors by B.I.A.  The second inning mirrored the first, with B.I.A. scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Hinal, scoring JT, but giving up two runs defensively.  The third inning saw B.I.A. shutout and also giving up an additonal run, making the score 5-2.  The rest of the game was a defensive battle, and Brews On First would land their first victory over Balls In Action in four meetings.

"They got in our heads tonight," explained Jacob after the game.

Scott would be more vocal after the game about suffering the first loss of the season.

"I got my team to ignore their trash talking, their drunkeness...and we succeeded in that respect.  But we were too focused on it...we left ourselves vulnerable defensively by doing just that.  I take full responsibility for the team's performance tonight."

Scott's fiancee, Marvette, would help out B.I.A. against Brews On First, making her debut.

B.I.A. Opens Season With Two Wins Despite Cold Weather and Sluggish Offense

Balls In Action finally took to the kickball fields last night as they opened up their 11th season against Houston Taggers.  B.I.A. previously shut them out on the two prior meetings with ease, but the pressure was on to not only keep their winning streak alive, but to keep their opponent from scoring.

After a scoreless first inning, Matt and JT would open the second inning with two singles, with Abigail driving in Matt from second on a RKI double.  After an additional two scoreless innings, the fifth inning would be B.I.A.'s best.  With two outs and JT at third, Roy would blast a shot into right-center field and collect his first inside-the-park homerun of the season, making the score 3-0.  Solid defense by Balls In Action in the sixth sealed the deal and gave them the win on their opening night.

The game was briefly delayed during the fourth inning as Scott would propose to girlfriend Marvette from Houston Taggers along the first base line following an intentional walk.

"I was very nervous.  I couldn't get all the words out.  I'm glad everybody was a part of something special tonight.  Marvette and I met on this very Field #2, so it made sense to propose to her here tonight."

After an hour break, B.I.A. met their new opponent, Where My Pitches At.  What resulted in a very slow run production for Balls In Action during the first game only got worse during the second, as the team was only able to shell out one run the entire game.  The only run came in the third inning off of a blast to right field by Scott, driving in David.

After the game, emotions ran high from some of the players, who expected a better performance overall, including Jacob.

"We kicked the ball well.  We just couldn't get anyone home.  Our mental game is not quite there yet."

Ashley leant her theory on the lack of run production after the victory over Where My Pitches At.

"The ball wasn't pitched very fast.  It's very difficult to get a great kick in when the ball is coming at you slow."

Happy Birthday to Jessica Goodman!!!

From all current and former players of Balls In Action, we would like to wish Jessica Goodman a very happy birthday!

Play Ball!!! (For Some)

The 2010 Winter kickball season began after two weeks of cancellations, but only for those teams playing on Memorial Park's Field #1.  Good news for teams like Brews On First, who finished the night with 2 wins, and Houston Taggers, but not very welcoming news for Balls In Action, who have been waiting to play since November 3.

The cancellation of only one field prompted Scott to immediately demand an explanation as to why B.I.A. would have to sit out for a third straight week.  Below is the city's official response on the matter:

Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to make up the games from
November 10th and 17th. There are no more available dates. The only
option is to issue refunds.

In reference to yesterday’s rainout decision, the fields were indeed too
wet to play. However, the reason why they were still not in playing
condition was because of damage done to the fields during last weekend.

A private organization that rented Fields #2 - #3 played on the
fields during the weekend when they were too wet and caused damage
to the fields.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this problem caused for your team.

Due to this, B.I.A.'s season is now reduced to six games, with their next two games being two weeks away, December 1 against Houston Taggers and Where My Pitches At, both on Memorial Park's Field #2.  Scott, although eager to get on the field, has expressed his frustration on the matter.

"I hope they can get these fields in playing condition by December 1.  This is completely ridiculous and unprofessional, especially to allow an organization to play on wet fields.  If we can't, why should they?"

Never in Balls In Action's franchise history have they had to endure three straight weeks of not playing.

Rain Dampens B.I.A.'s Return Yet Again

As soon as the city of Houston delcared all fields were playable, the rains came in, making the fields anything but playable.  B.I.A. was set to take on Where My Pitches At at 6:30pm, followed by a Houston Tagger matchup at 8:30pm, both on Field #1.  As soon as Scott and Rumaldo arrived at the park, it was clear that Balls In Action would have to wait yet another week to play kickball.

"The fields were so wet that if you stepped onto the infield, you probably would have sunk about two inches down."

Although Scott was disappointed, it does give the team a chance to recover, as rookie Abigail was out sick and rookie Sarah was not scheduled to appear for Wednesday's games due to outside obligations.

Both of these games will be made up at a later date.  The city of Houston has not updated their schedule at the time of this article.

Rain, Wet Fields Cancel Opening Day

The kickball world will have to wait until December 8 to see Balls In Action take on Brews On First, as early morning rains have left the fields too wet to play on, prompting the City of Houston to cancel all games tonight and reschedule them for December 15.  Rookie catcher, David Chu, took the cancellation hard.

"That is such a Debbie downer.  I was really looking forward to this, with or without Zeus' lightning bolts.  My uniform looks good...was ready to play."

As it stands, Opening Day will now be November 10, with Balls In Action opening the season at 6:30pm against a new opponent, Where My Pitches At, followed by an 8:30pm game against Houston Taggers, both at Memorial Park's beloved Field #1.

B.I.A. Reveals New Logo and Jersey

After months of planning, Balls In Action finally revealed their new logo and jersey to the public on Thursday.  The team's new logo is a complete overhaul from the original, dropping the lightning bolt and the red and white colors, and opting for a one color design.  Also new this season will be the first time each player will have their own number on the back of their jersey.  The jersey has shifted from a 100% cotton shirt to the Champion Double Dry Jersey, which is made up of a wicking material designed to keep each member of B.I.A. moisture free during game play.  The jersey is accented by contrast stitching  The team plans to wear their new jerseys for opening day on November 3 against Brews on First.

A very special thank you goes to Mona Beediahram of AMB Designs.  Without her, these new B.I.A. jerseys would not be possible!

B.I.A. Begins Third Year With Tough Schedule

Balls In Action returns to kickball next week for the 2010 Winter season, which will also mark the team's third year anniversary.  B.I.A., however, will have no time to celebrate as its schedule will include two defending champions from last season, with the remainder of the field making its debut season.  The tension will be high when the team opens the season with a rematch of the final game of the 2010 Summer season between Brews on First (2010 Fall champions for Wednesday nights), a game where B.I.A. came out winners in a tight 3-1 game and clinching their share of a three way tie for the championship.  Also on B.I.A.'s radar will be the Houston Taggers (2010 Fall champions for Tuesday night), a team where Scott and Jacob played for last season, and showed considerable signs of improvement.  It's unclear if Shake & Bake is the same team from B.I.A.'s first season, and the rest of the schedule is all against teams that have not played before, which leaves a lot of discussion about the uncertainty of each team.

Here is the 2010 Winter schedule:

Scott Helps Deliver Championship to Houston Taggers

The Houston Taggers are the 2010 Fall champions, and Scott couldn't be more proud.  Completing his 10-game loan with the Houston Taggers, Scott would hold off a comeback by Jersey Score to capture the championship with a 7-5 victory.

Tied at 2 after one, the Houston Taggers would go on a 5-run second inning.  Jersey Score would come back in the fourth with two runs and anothe run in the fifth, but Scott's pitching and the teams solid defense would hold them off and clinch their third championship in team history.

"I was nervous on the mound towards the end.  They were coming back slowly, but in the end, we had the bigger heart and we definitely wanted it more.  Not only did we redeem ourselves from two weeks ago, we're also champions.  No one can take that away from us."

Scott, along with Jacob. now returns to Balls In Action, where they will face off against Houston Taggers in the 2010 Winter season.

"They are a great group.  I'm really going to miss playing with them.  The next time we play against each other is going to be nothing short of being a great game."

Scott & Jacob Continue Winning Ways on Loan

The kickball world was saddened when Balls In Action was left ouf of the 2010 Fall season.  There was concern that the attention B.I.A. brought to the sport would decrease significantly while the league continued without them.  Fortunately, one team took it upon themselves to acquire two of B.I.A.'s best.

Scott recalls the night history was made between two rival teams.

"I remember when I had to make the dreaded announcement to the entire team that we weren't playing for the fall season.  Lots of disappointed faces...like telling your child that there isn't a Santa Claus.  However, on the last night of games during the summer season, I approached Irma from the Houston Taggers and offered my services to the team for the fall season if they were interested.  Irma had taken us out of a really serious forfeit situation when she subbed for us, so it was very nice of her to allow me to repay the favor by joining their team on temporary loan."

As Scott was announced as the new pitcher for Houston Taggers, the kickball world went crazy, but would be given another shock as B.I.A.'s Jacob would be added to the roster as well.

"We've made headlines before by being on loan to Fear My Spheres, but when the agreement was made to be on loan to Houston Taggers, there was something special in the newfound relationship."

As the 2010 Fall season started at TC Jester Park, the kickball world would witness a very dominating 4-0 first place start by Houston Taggers.  Through 4 games, the team would score 52 runs and only allow 15.  This was familiar territory for the "loaners".

"I was worried at first on how my pitching would affect the team.  I was afraid that the crazy world of B.I.A. would not mesh well with the Houston Taggers.  However, everything seemed to click well.  The team's performance was the best I've seen ever and it was nice to be a part of it."

But like every kickball team, an inconsistent roster and emotions would plague the Taggers for a crucial Week 3 of games.  They would suffer two devastating losses to Jersey Score and found themselves now tied for first with their opponent at 4-2.

"We were without key players, but my frustration got the best of me.  I let it consume me and affect my ability to keep everyone's heads up during the game.  We fought and clawed back as much as we could, but it ultimately comes down me failing everyone on the mound.  Luckily, one of the Taggers, Marvette, was able to calm me down.  I was losing it on the mound."

Last week, Houston Taggers would begin a new winning streak, with wins of 18-0 and 11-1, with Jacob kicking in top form, even scoring a homerun.  Even Scott's knee, which is still healing from arthroscopic surgery, seemed to allow him to run the bases a bit faster.  They find themselves in a position to claim the season championship outright with a vcitory over Jersey Score next week.

"The 18-0 game was ridiculous.  Even B.I.A. hasn't scored that many runs in a single game.  The style of our victories were a strong message to Jersey Score that it isn't over yet!"

Scott and Jacob may be leaving the team at the end of the season, but the Houston Taggers have left a valuable impression on them.

"They have reminded me how much fun this sport is.  I've forgotten that.  We're winning games with them and having fun at the same time.  It's been a nice change of pace for me."

B.I.A. Shares Another Title

Balls In Action would split their final two games, losing to Kickballas 5-4, then defeating Brews On First 3-1, to clinch their third championship, however sharing it in a three way tie with both opponents.

Even Mother Nature wanted to see these two games, as rain had been predicted throughout the day, but in the end, games were on and B.I.A. tried to extend their 8-0 record.  Kickballas, having one the game before against Houston Taggers, would finish their season 9-1 as they would defeat B.I.A. in a game that saw two crucial lead changes.  Scott would pinpoint where the team went wrong.

"What killed us was the errors.  We committed to many and they definitely capitalized on it."

With the loss, and a Brews On First victory later that night, Balls In Action, at best, would split the championship three ways with a victory over Brews On First.  With that being aware to B.I.A., their wasn't anything that could have stopped them from redeeming themselves in their final game of the season.  Two triples by Chance, who would finish the season as the team's kicking champion (.882), would be more than enough as Balls In Action finished their season with a team best 9-1 record with a 3-1 victory over Brews On First.

"Better to be tri-champions then no champions," pointed out Scott.  "We bounced back against a tough team and claimed a share of what we worked so hard for."

A pattern seems to loom over Balls In Action.  Their first championship was won solely during the 2009 Fall season, a co-championship with Balls N' Dolls during the 2010 Spring II season, and now a tri-championship to end the 2010 Summer season.

B.I.A. Awaits An Epic Battle

Tonight, Balls In Action will face their toughest night of kickball since the team's inception back in the winter of 2007.  To stand on top of the mountain, victorious, they will have to go through two tough opponents.
Both games are must wins for B.I.A., who will take on Kickballas first.  Their 7-1 record demands two victories tonight, just to keep their chances alive.  The two teams have never played each other before, so this game (7:30pm, Field #2) will be interesting.  The final game of the season for B.I.A. and Brews on First will be at 9:30pm, and will likely determine the championship.  Both teams begin tonight undefeated at 8-0 and both will most likely face off undefeated.  This game (9:30pm, Field #2) will pit two tough defenses and two power kicking teams, which will make it anyone's championship.  B.I.A. has a 2-0 lead all-time against Brews on First, an 11-4 extra inning victory, as well as a 9-5 victory, both during the 2010 Spring II season.

Happy Belated Birthday to Roy and Ashley!!!

From all current and former players of Balls In Action, we would like to wish Roy and Ashley a very happy birthday!  Roy turned 25 on August 1st and Ashley turned 23 on August 9th.

B.I.A.'s Undefeated Streak Reaches Eight Wins

Despite the slow start in both of B.I.A.'s games, their record now stands at a franchise best 8-0, after two victories over BHP Billiton and One Kick Wonders.

The third meeting ever between Balls In Action and BHP Billiton would start off in dueling fashion.  First kicker for BHP Billiton drove a monster shot over Roy in centerfield, resulting in the team's first home run for the season.  B.I.A., however, would bounce back in the bottom of the first inning with Ashley kicking in Jacob home from third on a sacrifice bunt, tying the game at 1-1.  Following two straight scoreless innings, BHP would open up the top of the fourth inning with another run, as Jacob would try to peg the runner heading to third but missing his target, allowing the runner to score easily and taking a 2-1 lead for BHP Billiton.  Bottom of the fourth saw an awakening by Balls In Action as the first 8 kickers would get on base.  JT and Roy would both drive in 2 runs a piece, with Claire driving in an additional runner, and B.I.A. would complete a 5 run fifth inning and a 6-2 lead.  After holding their opponents scoreless in the top of the sixth, B.I.A. would score four more runs, a two run homerun by Jacob and a 2 run double by Claire, and sealing the deal with a 10-2 lead.  Top of the seventh saw BHP Billiton score another run with a homerun over right center field.  The homerun was scored by the same guy for BHP, who hit a homerun to begin the game.  The final score would be 10-3 in favor of Balls In Action.

Balls In Action would next play One Kick Wonders, a first-time meeting for both teams.  The first three innings would be scoreless, but One Kick Wonders would make things very difficult for B.I.A., as they loaded the bases with no outs.  Luckily, B.I.A. would get out of the jam and keep their opponents from scoring.  Bottom of the fourth would see the first runs of the game as JT's 2 run triple drove in Ashley and sub Brad, breaking the scoreless streak for the game and a 2-0 lead.  Jeff's RKI double in the bottom of the fifth increased B.I.A.'s lead to 3-0.  The remainder of the game saw B.I.A.'s defense remain solid overall and preserve the 3-0 lead and their 8th victory of the season.  The shutout over One Kick Wonders was the fift shutout of the season, and 19th in team history.

Jim Kempers, former long-time B.I.A. player, would come from Phoenix, Arizona to sub in for B.I.A., who was without Chance and Doug.  Jim would go 1-for-3 total, but provided great defense and communication from the catcher position.

"It was fun.  If anyone decides to come out to Phoenix, I'll put them to work."

The night was also the debut of B.I.A.'s newest female player, Kelsey.  Kelsey would kick 3-for-7 total, scoring a run against BHP Billiton.  Her defense in right center field was solid, catching a fly ball during the team's first game.

"I had a lot of fun."

Although the wins were widely celebrated, coach Scott sees the team's performance on Wednesday night as a sign of disaster ahead.

"Our kicking was below our standards.  We didn't take advantage of early run opportunities and we were popping up too many for easy outs.  This may still result in wins over weaker teams, but not against our final two opponents.  We need to focus on consistent kicking and fielding."

Balls In Action will wrap up their tenth season with games against Kickballas (7-1) at 7:30pm and Brews On First (8-0) at 9:30pm, which will determine the 2010 Summer championship.  Both games are at Memorial Park Field #2.

B.I.A. Delivers on Stephanie Louie Day

This past Wednesday, Balls In Action continued their winning streak with two shutouts.  The winning streak, now at an all-time high of six, would be accomplished with each game ending in a 5th inning mercy rule.  The night would also see, the team record its first home run, as well as first strikeout, of the season.

SportClips would be up first, and the heckling from B.I.A.'s opponent was intense and comical.  Although there was a lot of words being shouted out at numerous players, it was not enough to stray Balls In Action from their focus on winning.  The first inning would be scoreless, but B.I.A. would break the game open in the second with a three-run showing, with JT, Claire and sub Amy driving in a run a piece.  The fourth inning proved the same as JT would drive in two with a triple, his first, and Claire with a sacrifice RKI.  The game would end during the fifth inning as Jeff's triple would drive in three runners, and cap a four run inning, aiding in the 10-0 victory.

Now with One Legged Hobos next on B.I.A.'s list, the streak would continue in dominating fashion, beginning with an game-opening home run by Jacob in the first.  The second would see JT drive in Jeff, and B.I.A. now led 2-0 after two innings.  The third inning proved too much for One Legged Hobos, as Scott would strike out his first kicker of the season on a called third strike.  Offensively, Balls In Action would go hysterical with the run production, as Chance would highlight the eight run inning with a monster three-run homerun.  An additonal run in both the fourth and fifth inning would seal the deal as B.I.A. would defeat One Legged Hobos 12-0.  B.I.A. had defeated One Legged Hobos in the first game of the season, 11-1.

Stephanie Louie would be honored after the game, as she had played her last two games of the night.  It was an emotional night as Steven and Amy subbed for the team in honor of their teammate.  Justin and Lynda, past B.I.A. players, watched both game and stayed for the ceremony.  Stephanie was presented with a signed base from both past and present players, a nod to an inside joke between coach Scott and Stephanie.  Pictures with players and friends were taken, and the night was finished with a beer-bashing display by coach Scott.

Jacob and JT Return To Two More Wins

Wednesday night not only saw the return of kickball at Memorial Park, after two straight weeks of rainouts, but also the return of two key players to B.I.A.'s lineup, Jacob and JT.  Jacob, who has been out since before the season started due to a minor motorcycle accident, and JT, who has returned from Louisiana, didn't miss a beat as they combined for an impressive 7-for-9 kicking to keep B.I.A.'s winning streak alive at 4 games.  Their efforts included 4 runs scored, 4 RKI's, four doubles.

First game of the night pitted Balls In Action against BHP Billiton, a team they defeated during the 2010 Spring II season at 8-0.  A shutout victory would fail early on in the game as BHP Billiton scored two runs to open the first inning.  However, B.I.A. would quickly get back on top by scoring three runs to end the first inning, as Chance, Scott and Ashley would each drive in one run.  After tying up the score at 3, BHP Billiton found themselves behind a run once again as Chance would drive in Roy with a triple, his first of the season.  From there, B.I.A.'s defense remained solid and wouldn't allow another run for the remainder of the game.  B.I.A.'s offense, on the other hand, was not done and scored two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth, with Jacob, JT, Stephanie and Amanda highlighting some impressive kicking to ending the game at 7-3.

Second game of the night would see Balls In Action playing Houston Taggers for the second time this season.  Last time these two met, Scott pitched an impressive 9-0 shutout.  With a different lineup, Houston Taggers looked to bring a second win for their team.  Unfortunately, B.I.A. had other plans.  Going for their fourth win in a row, Scott would pitch 4 scoreless innings.  Chance would drive in Jacob home in the first inning, followed by a four run blast in the second, an inning that saw JT, Scott, and Ashley drive in runs.  Now up 5-0, the third inning would see a 7-run dominance, especially from Chance, Jeff and JT, who combined for 4 RKI's, 2 runs, a double and a triple.  Leanne, B.I.A.'s new "12th Man", drove in a run as well, after being taunted at the plate, being referred to as an "easy out".  Another run in the fourth seasled the deal as Chance drove in Scott and the game would end in a mercy rule 13-0.

Luckily, B.I.A. did not forfeit any games, as Claire would be a no-show for both games, putting the team in a bind up to the last minute.  Coach Scott expressed sincere gratitude for the subs who filled in Claire's spot ont the roster.

"We were very gracious that a lady from the Houston Taggers organization was available to play with us for the first game, and equally gracious for one of our fans to play with us, especially since we were in a very tight spot."

B.I.A. now shares the top spot in the standings with Brews on First.

Special Report: Kickball's "Crippling" Effect

Looking from the point of view of someone who hasn't played kickball, one could come to the conclusion that there shouldn't be any reason why anyone would get hurt while playing a "child's game".  However, these past few season have opened up everyone's eyes on the injuries that can occur towards any player, on any given night.  From jammed fingers, leg cramps, sprained ankles, and even surgery, some of the players for Balls In Action have experienced the "crippling" effect that kickball can dish onto them.

For starters, Scott has seen a jammed finger continue to be in the healing process, nine months after it happened.  Stephanie has also fallen prey to a jammed thumb that is still not at 100%, over one year since the incident.

Muscle cramps have become a problem on the team as well, with players such as Amanda and Ashley having to play through the pain.  Even past players, such as Andy and Chris, favored their quad muscle on their kicking leg, making it difficult to kick and run.

Jessica's sprained ankle is still keeping her on the bench, for now, but it is uncertain when she will return.  Her injury is considered to be the worst on field injury in team history.

Even injuries sustained off the field have left players wanting to play, yet having to sit out against their will while they recover.  Scott and Jacob are prime examples of this.  Scott's knee surgery had left him to sit out the entire 2010 Spring II season, a season where they were crowned co-champions.  Jacob's motorcyle accident, although not serious, has him out for another two weeks.

With future injuries trying to be prevented each game, the uncertainty of what, when and where will continue to linger on in the minds of those that have suffered previous injuries, or for those that don't want to go through the healing, missing games in the process.

Wet Fields Cancel Anticipated Games

In what was being billed as the "Night of the Undefeated", the rainy Houston weather put an end to it just hours before game time.  Three teams, Balls In Action, Brews on First, and Kickballas are undefeated, and Balls In Action was scheduled to play the other two undefeated teams on the same night.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.

The games will be rescheduled for August 18.  All tickets with a July 21st date will be honored then.

The Tough Road Ahead

B.I.A.'s incredible 2-0 start last Wednesday proved to many that the team is ready to not only successfully defend its co-championship from the season before, but to make sure that their next championship is not shared with another team.  If the team's performance from Week 1, scoring a combined 20 runs and allowing only a single run, is any indication of things to come from, then Balls In Action are well on their way to winning its first back-to-back championship, and doing it with a perfect 10-0 record.

Yet, the road will get tougher for Balls In Action, as the pressure builds.  This Wednesday's games will put B.I.A. to the test as they take on Brews On First, a tough opponent from last season, and Kickballas, a team who has also scored a combined 20 runs in its first two games.  Both opponents are 2-0 after Week 1, and appear to have the same agenda in mind:  win, win, win.

Coach Scott sees both sides of the coin as they prepare for this week's games.

"We can't get complacent.  Last week's games were exciting.  Our run production was excellent and our defense was one step ahead of our opponents.  However, the teams we played against didn't have a chance, or clue, against us.  These next two teams smell blood, and seem ready to attack.  We have to be better than last week."

B.I.A. will take on Kickballas at 7:30pm, followed by Brews on First at 9:30pm, both games at Memorial Park Field #2.

Scott, Team Returns in Dominating Fashion

A very special opening day was a complete success for Balls In Action.  First, Scott returned to the mound, his first time since the middle of March.  Second, the team is celebrating its tenth season as a team.  And finally, they are 2-0, their seventh time in team history for opening days.

Not having met their opponents before, B.I.A. decided to welcome them to the league in the same manner that they were welcomed:  complete and utter domination.

The first game of the night pitted B.I.A. against One Legged Hobos, and from the start it wasn't pretty.  Balls In Action would begin the season with a 3 run first inning, an important inning that saw Roy, Stephanie and Chance combine for 3-for-3, with 3 runs scored and 2 RKIs, before the first team out was commited.  Ashley would finish the 3 run inning with an RKI double.  After giving up one run in the bottom of the first, Scott would prove to everyone why he is considered one of the best kickball pitchers today, by shutting out One Legged Hobos the remainder of the game.  Up 4-1 after two innings, B.I.A. would put the game away with a solid 7 run third inning, that inlcuded two 2RKI doubles by Stephanie and Scott.  The game was called due to a 5th Inning Mercy Rule, and Balls In Action opened up their 2010 Summer campaign with a dominating 11-1 victory.

The second game saw the same mentality by B.I.A., as they would go up against Houston Taggers.  Again, the first inning was opened up with a 4 run performance, which included doubles by Chris, Stephanie and Dan, which helped drive in the runs.  The second inning produced another 3 run showing, with solid hitting by the entire team, and the third inning added two more runs, including a nice double by Amanda.  After the fourth inning went scoreless, the umpire called the game as time expired, and Balls In Action would waqlk away with a 9-0 shutout of Houston Taggers.  Solid pitching by Scott, including getting out of tight bases loaded situation in the third, kept their opponents at bay.

McDonald's McGangBang Players of the Game:
vs. One Legged Hobos - Ashley (3-for-4, 2B, 2RKI, R)
vs. Houston Taggers - Stephanie (4-for-4, 2-2B, RKI, R)

KFC DoubleDown Play of the Game:
vs. One Legged Hobos - Chris (Stand up triple in the second inning)
vs. Houston Taggers - Chris' two sons for retrieving the foul ball.

Subway Sub of the Night:
Chris - Combined .750 kicking, 1.500 slugging (3-for-4, 2B, 3B, 2RKI, 3R)

Freebirds Fan of the Night:

Holes In Roster Don't Concern Coach

The official 15 player roster, which included 9 guys and 6 girls, has slowly deteriorated over the past couple of weeks.  Two new players were unable to commit to a full season, while JT and Rumaldo are currently involved with their temporary work assignments in Louisiana.  On top of that, injuries are still occuring, even before the season officially begins.  Jessica is still healing from her sprained ankle from last season and is unsure when she will be back this season.  Jacob was involved in a motorcycle accident last Friday morning.  Although he sustained no serious injuries, he is expected to miss 2-3 weeks.

With the roster now down to 9 healthy, commited players, Coach Scott doesn't see any need to create panic.

"I am confident that anyone I put out there to fill in the vacant positions will help us continue our winning tradition.  We are not at full strength, but we don't have to give up either.  Everyone that steps out on that field in B.I.A. black will do his or her part to help bring another championship home."

Although a consistent roster is ideal, Coach Scott understands that unexpected events will cause any roster to be modified.

"I want all of our injured players to heal up.  I want all of our players who are unable to commit to take care of their business.  Their spot on the team will not be lost.  I want them to be at 100% physically and mentally when their time has come to rejoin the team."

Rainy Weather Cancels B.I.A.'s Opening Day Plans

Houston will have to wait for another week to experience Balls In Action's monumental tenth season. Rain has hit the city all day and has made all fields unplayable. Today's cancelled games will be made up on August 11. All game tickets purchased ahead of time will be honored on the make-up date.

B.I.A. Looks to Honor Tenth Season with Strong Opening Day

The fans will come out, the media will be in full swing, and the teams will stare in awe as America's beloved kickball team, Balls In Action, take the field for their tenth season.  Whether you have been a fan since the beginning, or caught on to the team's hype in their later seasons, one can make the point that their success on opening day for B.I.A. has been one of their strongest qualities.

In the nine seasons prior, Balls In Action has a 14-4 record on opening day, with an equal 7-2 record for both the first game and second game.  The team has only suffered an 0-2 start once, which was during their inaugural season.  Only twice has B.I.A. walked out of opening day with a 1-1 record, the latest being last season.  The remaining six seasons, the team has enjoyed a 2-0 start after opening day, the first time being during their second season, an impressive 2-0 start that was accomplished with only four guys and four girls.

Tonight's games favor B.I.A. to begin their tenth season at 2-0, with their first opponent, BHP Billiton (Memorial Park Field #1, 6:30pm) and second opponent, We Got the Runs (Memorial Park Field #1, 8:30pm).  Coach Scott values the teams successful past on opening day and sees tonight's games going very well for B.I.A.

"You never know what to expect on opening day.  Any team can beat you, no matter your performance from seasons before, but our history on opening day proves how strong of a team we are and how ready we are to play."

Team Notes:
Balls In Action is 1-0 against BHP Billiton, defeating them last season 8-0.  This will be the first time B.I.A. will go up against We Got the Runs.

Scott will take the mound for the first time since his season ending knee surgery.  He missed the entire 2010 Spring II season due to chipped cartilage underneath his left knee cap.

Rumaldo will take the field for the first time since the 2009 Winter season.  He missed the entire 2010 Spring II season due to a commitment in Louisiana.

Happy Birthday to Jacob!!!

From all current and former players of Balls In Action, we would like to wish Jacob a very happy 26th birthday!

Twenty Questions with Coach Scott

Coach Scott has done more than his share of interviews over the past 3 years with ESPN and the like, but today I had the privilege of getting an in-depth, exclusive interview for our B.I.A. blog. It's the interview we've all been waiting for, and what better way to start celebrating 10 seasons of B.I.A. than a trip down memory lane with our esteemed coach and pitcher!

salgal: First of all, welcome back, Scott! You were unable to play all last season because of your knee surgery. What was it like having to sit out an entire season?
Scott: That was, without a doubt, the most difficult thing to do. Don’t get me wrong…I was proud to have coached a team to victory, but to watch others have that luxury of going out there and playing kickball, playing the game that I hold dear to my heart, it was definitely very difficult to have to accept.
salgal: Yes, I remember looking to you in the dugout after we'd take the field, and I could see how badly you wanted to be out there with us. But we're glad you will be rejoining us tomorrow! How do you feel about coming back to play tomorrow night?
Scott: I can’t wait. I’m a bit nervous and the butterflies will be in my stomach tomorrow night. Yet, I know that feeling I get when I take the mound will be back and it’ll feel like I haven’t missed an entire season.
salgal: We're about to start our 10th season of B.I.A., hard to believe! What do you think about this? Did you ever think we'd be playing this long?
Scott: B.I.A.’s 10th season is a very special milestone in the team’s history. We’ve endured quite a bit: top-notch victories, bitter defeats, breath-taking plays, shocking errors, painful injuries. On top of that, we were able to win a couple of championships. I never thought we would be playing this long, but I’m very fortunate to know so many that have been able to help keep this team going and continuing its success on the field.
salgal: Well, part of the solidarity of the team has been due to your leadership and commitment as our coach. What motivates you as Coach and what is your #1 goal for the team?
Scott: My #1 goal for the team is play hard….win or lose. I can’t find any fault in a team that loses when they put every ounce of energy into the game. Knowing that your teammates want to play at their best really helps in the motivation to want to coach the team to victory.
salgal: Equally as important as your coaching has been your role as our pitcher. What goes through your mind right before you pitch?
Scott: When I first started pitching, it was always “Come on Scott, just roll it down the middle.” Now it’s more of how fast or slow should I pitch. Should I make it bounce? Down the middle or at the corner? What if I curve it this time? There’s definitely more thought into it now than before.
salgal: And what goes through your mind right before you kick?
Scott: Again, when I first started playing, I was always popping it up, so I always kept telling myself “Keep it on the ground.” Now that I’ve been able to control my kicking, it’s more of “Okay, where are the holes in the defense? Where are the nervous people in the outfield? Should I just bunt it and move the runners over?” Again, it’s become a more complicated process of thinking for me.
salgal: Yes, I think for a lot of us who've played several seasons, our strategy in kicking and in the field has changed over time. What are your thoughts on the evolution of B.I.A.'s game play?
Scott: We have definitely come a long way. I think if we watched a video of ourselves play from the first season, we would probably laugh and/or be disgusted. I know I’ve come a long way from throwing my cap on the mound after giving up the winning run. We are definitely a more serious team and I feel it works better that way for us, especially since we are still able to have fun with kickball.
salgal: The changes in the game rules over the seasons has also affected our game play. What are your thoughts on the evolution of the City of Houston's kickball rules?
Scott: I wish they would make a decision on the rules and just stick with it. Every season it seems like the tweak them just a bit, without warning. I wouldn’t care on what they agree on, just as long as we have a set of “official” rules and that each season we play, those are the rules we play under. But as Rumaldo always says, “That’s the city for ya!”
salgal: It's definitely been frustrating at times. But let's move on to some fun questions; we're curious to know which moments stand out most to you. Which of our 9 seasons played is the most memorable?
Scott: The 2009 Fall season, hands down. We won our first championship. I remember setting that season as the standard for how we play now. No more 2 or 3 win seasons for us. We were on top of our game that season.
salgal: For sure! What are your top 3 all-time favorite personal B.I.A. moments?
Scott: #3 is when I struck out my first kicker during the first season. It was the last game of the season and I struck him out swinging with a 13” diameter ball. To this day I’m not sure how I pulled that off. It’s a 13” ball for crying out loud!
#2 is kicking a homerun after running a ½ mile back to the field when I had to move my truck to a different parking spot. I didn’t want to get a ticket by the officer out in the lot and moved it about a ½ mile away. I was so winded after that, but when I got back to the dugout, it was my turn to kick. I swung at the first pitch and rounded all four bases for a homerun. I was tired!
#1 is defeating Fear My Spheres 1-0 in what can only be the toughest game I had to pitch. I seriously thought that I was going to have a heart attack on the mound. The game was too intense and there were plenty of times I thought we were going to lost that 1-0 lead. That game is definitely the greatest game in B.I.A. history.
salgal: I'm a little scared to ask, but what is your least favorite B.I.A. moment?
Scott: When we were down a girl during the 2009 Summer season. Luckily the umpire allowed us to play with only 3 girls, but I was so pissed off about the girl no-showing, especially after she told me she would, that, from that night on, I changed my attitude on coaching. Coaching a kickball team shouldn’t be that nerve-racking, but that night it was…because of her.
salgal: I'm really glad we haven't run into the situation since. Looking back, which B.I.A. moment makes you laugh the hardest?
Scott: Some people have bought this story, but many have not. I laugh a lot about this story, even now! I’m talking about keeping the story going about how Stephanie (aka salgal) accidentally kicked me in the groin! I think her foot glanced onto my knee, but I played it off by falling to the ground, tearing up in pain, holding my groin. It was fun while it lasted, but she’s been too tough to make her believe my “side” of the story.
salgal: Wait, it sounds like the story is starting to change! I was scared that would be your least favorite moment, but since it didn't really happen I guess it can't be! You'll never get me to believe your side of the story, but it definitely makes me laugh too. I'm surprised how many times I've heard you tell this story; I have a feeling I'll never hear the end of it! Which B.I.A. moment is the most surprising to you to this day?
Scott: Winning our first two games of our second season with only 4 guys and 4 girls. Just an unbelievable effort by us that night. We definitely surprised both ourselves and our opponents that night!
salgal: It was crazy that we won that game, especially since we hadn't gotten many wins yet! What is the most outrageous or craziest B.I.A. moment you can remember?
Scott: Caroline catching her own foul ball. I don’t think anything can top that!
salgal: We all had a good laugh about that! Speaking of Caroline, she was a key person in creating our team jerseys. We've had the same jerseys for 10 seasons now. If our jerseys had numbers, what would yours have?
Scott: 12…no doubt about it. It’s the day that I was born and it was a number I wore in high school. It’s quite possibly the best number in the world.
salgal: Well hopefully one day we'll have new jerseys so you can wear your number again. Over the years BIA has developed into a one-of-a-kind kickball team because of the unique things we have and do. Which is your favorite?
Scott: The blog. It started off as a joke, but I’m amazed by how many actually read it. It’s definitely your #1 source for all B.I.A. news, scores, and more.
salgal: Haha yes, I remember mentioning it to you as a joke but I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how far you've taken it. One last question on favorites: Who is your favorite BIA player (past or present)?
Scott: That’s a tough one. If I had to choose one, I would pick Jacob. He’s very fast in the outfield and quick on the base path. I know I can always count on him to make the play. He’s just as determined to win as I am.
salgal: I remember when you interviewed Jacob, he made the comment in one of his answers that kickball saved his life. How has kickball changed your life?
Scott: I never knew how much of an impact kicking balls would have on my life. It has been a pleasure thus far and I don’t see myself giving up this slice of paradise anytime soon.
salgal: I know it's hard to fathom, but one day you'll have to retire from kickball.... When and how do you see that happening?
Scott: Whatever date will be on my death certificate will be the day I stop playing kickball. I hope they have kickball in heaven.
salgal: The kickball world will mourn that day. But since we know that day won't be here anytime soon, what are your aspirations for the next 10 seasons of B.I.A.?
Scott: I’m hoping we can continue playing with this same intensity, if not more. We’ve made so many friends through kickball and B.I.A. that playing another 10 seasons will just make that bond with each other stronger, thus making us more successful on the field and making this game more enjoyable down the road.
salgal: Yes, we've come a long way and we're all looking forward to our 10th season this summer! Well, that's all the questions I have for now. Thanks for taking the time to open up to us; it's been a pleasure talking with you and getting to know your personal views on kickball and our team. Go B.I.A.!!

2010 Summer Schedule Revealed

Yesterday, the City of Houston revealed its 2010 Summer kickball schedule online, and Balls In Action will be making new friends this coming season!

Teams like D'Feeters, New Kicks on the Block and Balls N' Dolls were not able to register for either day, but teams like We Got the Runs, One Legged Hobos, Houston Taggers, Kickballas and Sports Clips will join B.I.A. on a quest to win the summer championship.  BHP Billiton and Brews on First, two opponents from last season, will try to stop Balls In Action this season from repeating as champs.

Here is the schedule as of today.  It is tentative as you never know when the city might change it prior to opening day.  All games will be played at Memorial Park in Houston.

Something To Do In Between Kickball Seasons

If you're like me, then the time in between kickball seasons can be excruciating.  If you're like me, you might noticing signs of withdrawal; shaking, pacing, etc.  If you're like me, then you'll appreciate this.

I came across a website called Sustain Lane, a "people-powered sustainability guide".  In this website, they have an interesting how-to on making a kickball planter.
"As we are not prone to ever throw anything away (ever), it just lamely drifted around the office as people slowly kicked it about in dissatisfaction from spot to spot. This continued for a while until one day I had the idea to resurrect this ball by cutting it in half and turn it into a hanging plant basket. And, that is precisely what I did. Follows are directions so you can do the same."

You can read all about it by clicking here.  Enjoy!

D'Feeters Will Not Play 2010 Summer Season

The 2010 Summer season registration opened yesterday at 8:00am.  By noon, all 8 spots for Monday and all 8 spots for Wednesday were filled.  Unfortunately for some teams, they were not able to register in time.  D'Feeters, a long-time rival of B.I.A., was one of those teams.

Yoli Rios, team captain for D'Feeters, decided to register her team yesterday evening, but quickly noticed that both days were full.

"I got on this evening to register for the next session and they are all taken; even Monday!  So we will have to see ya in the fall."

Scott, who has kept in touch with teams like Fear My Spheres and D'Feeters, was a bit disappointed upon hearing the news.

"I like playing against them.  They are a fun team to be around and the competition that they bring is always exciting.  I was looking forward to going up against them this coming season."

B.I.A. By The Numbers: 2010 Spring II Edition

B.I.A. would post record-breaking numbers this season, including tying some all-time records.  Their 8 win season is now considered their best season, beating out the back-to-back 7 win seasons they had during the 2009 Spring I and Summer seasons.  Their .800 winning percentage is the best they have posted when playing a full 10 game schedule.  Balls In Action would score 75 total runs, shattering the previous record of 55 total runs from the 2009 Spring I season.  The team concluded its season with a +46 point differential, again breaking the record set during the 2009 Spring I season of +30.  After a victory over D'Feeters this season, B.I.A. continued its undefeated winning streak against them, which now is at 8 games.

B.I.A. tied its win streak record of 5 wins this season, a record that was set during the team's first championship season back in the Fall of 2009.  When Balls In Action took on New Kicks on the Block the second time this season, they defeated them 13-1, forcing a 5th inning mercy rule.  This ties a mark they set during the 2009 Spring I season when they defeated Houston All-Stars 13-1, forcing a 5th inning mercy rule.

Roy would become the first pitcher in B.I.A. history to record 8 wins in a single season.  Stephanie, despite missing the first two games of this past season, now leads the club with 66 total games played.  Scott would collect his 25th win as coach, and now leads the club with 28 total wins as coach.

B.I.A. Shares Championship with Balls N' Dolls

The pressure was on both Balls In Action and Balls N' Dolls.  Both teams were tied for first place going into last Wednesday, and both need to win to keep their championship chances alive.  In the end, the result was the same as before, a tie.

The City of Houston, who views the kickball league as "recreational" with no emphasis on "a high level of competition", has no tie-breaking system to determine the champion in the case of a tie.  Approaching Louis Moore, the person in charge of adult sports for the city, about the situation, he showed no desire to change the rules.

"Both teams are the champions.  Both teams will receive shirts."

The first game of the night pitted Toe Poke and B.I.A., however, it would be the huge early start by B.I.A. that would put the game away early.  The first inning saw the first nine kickers either getting on base, or driving in runs.  Taking advantage of the less-than sober team, Balls In Action would take an early 5-0 lead.  After giving up two runs, the third inning would prove to be the final nail in the coffin for Toe Poke, as two more runs were driven in, one by Chris and JT.  The result would be a comfortable 7-2 victory.

McDonald's McGangBang Player of the Game went to JT, going 2-for-2, with a double, triple, 2RKI's and 2 runs scored.

KFC DoubleDown Play of the Game went to Claire, for her running catch in the outfield, sacrificing her chest in the process.

Subway Sub of the Night went to Chris, going 2-for-2, with a double, RKI, and one run scored.

With Balls N' Dolls winning the 7:30 game, the pressure was now on for B.I.A. as a win would guarantee at least a share of the championship.

After a scoreless first inning, Balls In Action took it to Brews on First, scoring one in the second, with Doug driving in JT.  The third inning saw an additional 4 runs scored, including a three run homerun by Jacob.  Going into the fifth, up 5-0, Brews on First began it's rally, scoring one in the fifth, three in the sixth and 1 in the seventh.  However, consistent kicking by B.I.A. and smart baserunning led to 9-5 season finale and a share of the championship.

McDonald's McGangBang Player of the Game went to Jacob, going 3-for-3, with 2 hits, 1 HR, 3RKI's and 2 runs scored.

KFC DoubleDown Play of the Game went to Jacob and Roy for their double play, catching the runner off guard to complete the double play.

Subway Sub of the Night went to David, going 1-for-2, with a run scored.
